The HNRU is a state of the art research and training facility that facilitates and supports nutrition research in Western Canada. It is located on the second floor of the Alberta Diabetes Institute at the University of Alberta.
The HNRU offers many services and facilities, including body composition analysis, energy metabolism testing, nutrient analysis and the preparation of research reports. The unit also possesses several rooms that can be used for research purposes, including a reception area, blood sampling/processing laboratory, metabolic kitchen, dining/conference room, clinic room and office space for research coordinators.
The Clinical Investigation Unit located on the second floor of the Stollery Children's Hospital provides diagnostic and clinical research testing for pediatric patients.
The MetFiber study has some assessments that happen here - for more details visit our Get Involved Page.
Have you ever wondered how many calories you actually burn in a day? This little room can tell you! A whole-body indirect calorimeter room is a specialized, sealed chamber (like a small hotel-room). It is designed to precisely measure human energy expenditure, substrate oxidation (fat/carb/protein use), and metabolic rates over 24+ hours. Participants live inside including eating, sleeping, and exercising while researchers their monitor oxygen (O2) consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) production. From this we can calculate 24-hour energy expenditure, basal metabolic rate, and more.
The SPEED Study is using this room for research on individuals with type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide - learn more here!
