The Haqq lab focuses on precision therapy for childhood obesity including the development and implementation of novel obesity medications. The lab is run by Dr. Andrea Haqq. She is a clinician scientist and pediatric endocrinologist who runs a genetic obesity and endocrine clinic serving western Canada, advocating for optimization of health care for children with severe obesity. Her research has two streams: 1) industry-funded clinical trials, and 2) investigator initiated research.
Her lab team currently consists of two postdoctoral fellow, two PhD students, one masters student, three summer research assistants, and a research coordinator (see Our Team for more details). The lab is currently recruiting participants for studies investigating:
1) energy expenditure changes with semaglutide in adults with type 2 diabetes,
2) addressing caregiver burden for those caring for children with rare genetic obesity conditions,
3) novel 3D-optical scanning for measurement of body composition in adolescents,
4) impact of metformin and/or fiber supplementation on obesity in adolescents.
Check our our Get Involved page for more details.
CBC Radio Active Interview
Dr Haqq and PhD Student Giovanna Bergamasco recently chatted with CBC Radio Active about weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, why not everyone loses the same amount of weight on them, and what we are doing to help figure out why (i.e., the SPEED Study)!
Check out their interview here.
A Very Productive Summer
This summer, we had the pleasure of having two first year medical students and a Kinesiology practicum student work with us - they have been working hard! Emily is working with a dataset from the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association looking at nutritional supplement use; Dami was investigating the relationships between cardiometabolic health markers and body composition in adolescents (check out the WCHRI summer student profiles); and Dilaila has been helping with our project on caregiver burden for people caring for individuals with rare genetic obesity conditions. They have been a delight to have around and will be missed this fall.
Thank you all and best of luck in your next adventures!
Congratulations Alice!
Alice recently won an award to do an exchange in the Netherlands!
Congratulations to Alice on receiving the Centennial Dutch Endowment Travel and Experiential Learning Award. Alice will be travelling to the Netherlands next year to study abroad!
Congratulations Camilla!
Camilla recently defended her Masters thesis and will be moving on to start her PhD this fall with Dr. Prado!
Her project looked at the validity of two novel 3D optical scanners for estimating body composition in adolescents. She presented preliminary data on the first 50 participants, and so far it is looking promising.
Congratulations Giovanna!
Giovanna is the recipient of a 2026 Alberta Diabetes Institute Graduate Studentship for her project investigating semaglutide use and energy expenditure in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
We are still recruiting! Check out the project here.
Our team members are sponsored through local, provincial, and national studentships and fellowships!
